Flood 2010

This year’s flood came fast and early, but fortunately, it wasn’t as alarming as the 2009 flood. The city got the sandbag operation in gear on March 1. The forecasts didn’t even call for a temporary diking operation along Lindenwood Park, which allowed for these quick cell phone pictures.

Christmas 2009

We had a nice, quiet Christmas this year. The 17″ or so of snow helped keep us in and concentrated. It all began with Sofie’s birthday and ended with a Chocolate-Malt Stump de Noël. Yum.

The kids are awaiting the big night! Alex is a jack-o-lantern, Sofia is a cat, and Lucia (who doesn’t like her makeup at all) is a dalmatian.

Oktoberfest, 2009

Last weekend, we made our annual pilgrimage to Dallas, Wi to participate in the annual Dallas Oktoberfest. Together with the Fredrichs, we had some great beer from the Viking Brewery and ate part of the world’s longest bratwurst.

Brake Job

I had to get some much needed work done on the Golf. After 13 years, it finally needed new rotors. (I’ve only got about 65,000 miles on it, since I bike most of the time, and the Golf is barely big enough for the whole family.) Last year, the brake cylinders in the rear drums gave out, and I needed new shoes anyhow, and although the drums are practically new, they didn’t paint the drums, so they were mighty rusted. I figured I’d paint them at the same time as I replaced the rotors. Fun times ahead! Actually, aside from a seized spacer in the brake shoe carrier, the rotors were a breeze. The drums were more of a challenge, until I learned what “release the adjustment wedge” really meant. In my world, “release the adjustment wedge” means “shoot it across the garage,” which I dutifully did. In addition to my bentley manual, I had help from the internets.

First Day of School

Man – we haven’t been good about keeping the blog up to date. It was the first day of school today, and Lucy started preschool. Sofie’s in the first grade now, and Alex is in 6th. Yikes.

So you leave your kids with their grandparents for a fun couple of days, right? Then you get some pictures like this in your inbox the day you get home. Fun!

Seriously though, the Tulsa City County Public Library has a really good summer program, and they had a special effects artist show up and wound your kids like this for free. Nice!

We decided that after a hard day of playing and weeding the garden (we all pitched in, even me!), we would make some home made noodles, sauce and meatballs. So we had some wide egg noodles, marinara sauce, and we used the holy triumvirate of meats (beef, veal and pork) for the meatballs. Three hours, from start to finish.

We’ve been spending lots of time outdoors lately. Fargo has had nearly perfect weather. (Only recently have the mosquitos started to come out in force, but we’ve got every confidence that the city/county will start taking care of those.)
