Moving (or: So it begins)

We got our trailer today from ABF — the people have been nothing but nice, and it looks like it will go pretty well. We may be paying marginally more than a U-Haul truck, but we won’t have to drive it, and it’s a 28′ semi trailer. They’ll haul this down to Georgia next week, and we’ll have about 4 days to remove our stuff from it.

Rebecca and I figured we would start with the easy boxes, so here we have about 80 of them on the truck. Lucy’s striking a pose. I think we’ll have enough room.

A Cold New Year’s Day

It’s a clear, brilliant and therefore cold New Year’s Day. We’re up to -12°F now. Sometimes when it’s this cold, and the dew point is a little higher, you see the moisture freeze right out of the air, but it’s too dry for that today. Still, the cold has preserved the snow that built up on the roof, and it’s nice and crunchy underfoot.

The cold gave us the perfect excuse to try out our new waffle pancake pan. No longer are we stuck in the awkward situation where we are forced to choose between waffles and pancakes. We can do both at the same time!

Hawaii

Alex and I made it to Hawaii, and I’m finally getting around to posting some pictures. We think it’s probably an awful place for a conference, because most people probably want to enjoy the island(s), rather than the conference. We noticed that people increasingly felt less guilty about not going to the conference. Oh well, it was nice! On Friday, we went in with a fellow CS student and rented a car to tour Oahu.

Oktoberfest, 2009

Last weekend, we made our annual pilgrimage to Dallas, Wi to participate in the annual Dallas Oktoberfest. Together with the Fredrichs, we had some great beer from the Viking Brewery and ate part of the world’s longest bratwurst.

It’s hard to get up. I’ve got no excuses… it used to be dark until 8. Now it’s light before 6. Without these three, I’d probably never get up and at ‘em.

Remodel Update

So, we’ve had this remodel project going for a while. We stared by poking a hole in the Southern wall from our kitchen into the living room so we could get all that sun into the kitchen. That worked pretty well, but I wasn’t terribly motivated to get the mudding done. Well, I got that done over the course of two weeks. The previous owners did us a big favor by going with some really rough texture with lots of trowel lines in it. It’s not perfect, but I think it’s passable.

This past week, Rebecca’s gone to town on painting the kitchen, and we’ve even fixed some overlooked wall gouges from our cabinet hanging two summers ago. We finished that up this past weekend, and I got the living room’s base coat painted. My wife’s going to have to take on the faux finish, and then I can get to work on the red oak ledge for the passthrough.

It’s a little depressing coming back to the Winter in Fargo after spending weeks in warmer weather. However, we’ve had a mid-January thaw of sorts, and we get to tell impressive stories of surviving in minus-30˚ weather.

Vacation, 2008-2009

We drove down South to Tulsa for a quick pit-stop, then drove due West, skirting Mexico to San Diego. It was a lot of driving, but it was fun. We got to see tumbleweeds, a 72 oz steak, big ships, sun, and mountains. We also got to see crazy people loading up snow to bring back home… weird.
