Last weekend’s bathroom progress

I got the shower caulked. The caulk turned out to be almost a perfect match for the corner pieces that we chose. Yay!

I also made the tub surround. This entailed 1/4″ Hardiboard, and some framing. The manufacturer suggests two service access points, so I figured, I’d make a couple of 2×4 boxes, attach the Hardiboard to them, and then slide that in to the tub surround framing. That seems to have worked.

The big surprise of the weekend was moving the outlet. It occurred to me that it was pretty close to where I’d be putting in tile, and that it was directly over the tub. Not a good idea to have an outlet over the tub, eh? (In fact, it’s against the nation electric code…) Anyhow: The romex all came out of the attic, but I found out that we have exactly 12″ of 2×4′s at the top of each wall. That made it a much bigger project, but I got it all sorted in the long run, and we have the proper GFCI outlet as well.

Watershed Moment

The shower floor has now been grouted. We chose a shade of gray instead of the (Winter’s) bone shade that we are using everywhere else.

I made a second pass over yesterday’s grout joints to remove any haze from the epoxy. Things are turning out very well, so far.

First Grouting

With all the tiles in place (except for around the tub), it’s finally time to grout the tiles. We decided to go with the epoxy grout. Even though it’s more trouble to put down, and I had to work pretty fast, I don’t really like the maintenance associated with traditional grout. This stuff is water proof and won’t ever need to be sealed. It’s funny: in Fargo, it was cool enough when I did it that the reaction time slowed and the grout sagged in the joints. In Macon, the reaction was quick, and I had to race to get the grout in the joints before it was unworkable…
